Simon Patterson was born in Surrey, England in 1969 as a grand son of English, Scottish, Wales and Irish descent which indicates his perfect British heritage.
Although his activities are subdued to Hirst and Gordon, he is a magnificent artist within the Young British Artists (YBA) which supported 90's contemporary art in U.K. Patterson's artworks are not so easy to understand, yet his keen wit comes from the fact that he graduated from the Goldsmiths College. The motifs he chooses include ships, maps, astronomy maps, rulers and the well known underground maps are metamorphosed into smart artworks with nostalgia and wit which fascinate viewers.

Since the first exhibition "High Fidelity" in 1994 at Roentgen Kunstraum and Kohji Ogura Gallery, he has held many exhibitions in Japan.

The 13 pieces of linens, each of which measures 91 x 127cm, are filled with 1,200 letters. The letters - the names of all the astronauts up to now - represent the glory of their achievements. The installation work by Patterson for this show titled 'in orbit', is the synthesis of disparate elements into an integral whole. After four and a half years of Patterson's absence, his latest works will be on view. At this show, the gallery will be directly connected to outer space.

At the upcoming exhibition with us, Patterson will show his recent works which will be for the first time in Japan in the past 4 years, since March 2004. The artist never reveals his upcoming works, so therefore we are always in expectations.

A reception for the artist will be held on 3 (Fri.) October, from 18:00~.
Everyone is welcome.
